A diya is an oil lamp that is usually made from clay and is used to celebrate Indian festivals particularly the Hindu festival of Diwali. This simple craft project to make a Diwali diya is a great way for children to learn about the festival with opportunity to get creative.
To Make the Diwali Diya
1. Using a piece of air hardening clay, shape to form a hollow dish in which a tea light candle will fit.
2. The diya can then be decorated by sticking on pieces of clay or marking the clay using a tool. The clay will then need to be left to harden.
3. The clay can be painted using ready mix paint so that it looks bright and colourful. Clear varnish can also be used.
4. Once the paint has dried put the flameless tea light into the diya.
