Schools win £1000 worth of display materials in The Consortium's annual competition
November 2011
Educational Supplier of the Year, The Consortium was delighted to present the winners of their annual display competition with their winner's certificate and £1,000 of display materials from supplier Creativity International.
Hundreds of entries were received from primary and secondary schools all over the country, with displays covering topics as diverse as nocturnal animals, rainforests and sunflowers. All the entries were judged by a panel from The Consortium and Creativity International who were looking for a striking and attractive design, imaginative content and how the materials had been used to make the display.
The secondary school winner was Leehurst Swan School in Wiltshire with their display called "Alice in Wonderland and the Mad Hatter's Tea Party". The project was developed when the school was asked to put a display in a shop in Salisbury town centre. The school chose the Mad Hatter's Tea Party as their theme as they felt that all the year groups could get involved. The resulting display was a whole school effort and included elements of pottery, paper mache, furniture making and fabric design as well as many other skills. They are planning to use the display again on a float in next year's Salisbury carnival where the students will dress up as the characters. Mrs Lee, Head of Art at Leehurst Swan, commented, "We are ecstatic about winning the prize – the additional materials will really benefit the students."
The winner of the primary school competition was St Luke's CE VA Primary school in Bournemouth with their display "Equador" which was created as part of their whole school Art's week with children from both Year 4 and Year 1 working together to explore and create images of Ecuador. This fitted in with a whole school focus on South America which culminated in an open Arts day for parents and a carnival float as part of the Winton Carnival!
Ruth Whitaker, Category Manager for Art and Craft Curriculum Resources at The Consortium and one of the judges, thanked all those who entered and offered her congratulations to the winners adding: "We are delighted to be involved in recognising the high quality of the art and craft projects in schools. By partnering with specialist, innovative suppliers such as Creativity International, we are able to offer a wide range of materials to support these activities in the classroom."
